Located in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, Ashikaga Flower Park is a world-class floral destination famously selected by CNN as one of the “Dream Destinations in the World.” While its spring wisterias are legendary, its winter event—“The Garden of Illuminated Flowers (Flower Fantasy)”—is equally spectacular. Ranked as one of Japan’s “Top Three Illuminations” and winning the 2025 International Illumination Award, this is an unmissable winter spectacle.
With over 5 million LED lights and a brand-new “Scented Immersive Experience,” here is everything you need to know about this magical night out.

1. Highlights of the 2025-2026 Illumination
The event spans four months and features three distinct themes, ensuring a unique experience depending on when you visit.

Three Seasonal Chapters
- 【Stage 1】Oct 18 – Mid-Nov: Fusion of Light and Amethyst Sage This period features the beautiful purple Amethyst Sage flowers. The soft glow of the LEDs complements the natural beauty of the real flowers, creating a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere unique to a botanical garden.
- 【Stage 2】Late Nov – Late Dec: Christmas Fantasy The park transforms into a romantic Christmas wonderland. With special programs, festive photo spots, and a guest appearance by Santa Claus, it’s the perfect setting for families and couples alike.
- 【Stage 3】Jan 1 – Feb 15: New Year Illumination A celebration of the New Year, featuring the elegant lighting of winter-blooming peonies, Japanese allspice (Roubai), and winter red plums. It offers a serene and traditional Japanese winter vibe.
【New】Scented & Visual Immersive Experience
This season introduces a revolutionary sensory element: “Scented Lighting.” You can now experience the fragrance of the flowers alongside the visual spectacle.
- Miracle Wisteria (Wisteria Scent) In collaboration with a fragrance maker founded in 1808, the park has recreated the exact scent of its famous Great Wisteria. Standing under the glow of wisteria-shaped LEDs while surrounded by the floral aroma feels like a leap into spring.
- Rose Garden of Light (Rose Scent) Enjoy a 120-meter mural of light and 3D rose illuminations. From the observation deck, you will be enveloped in a rich, elegant rose fragrance that perfectly matches the vibrant visuals.
- Flower Castle (Blue Rose Scent) Step inside this fairy-tale castle to find a mysterious space filled with the refreshing scent of Blue Roses. It is a truly immersive experience that makes you feel like the protagonist of a storybook.

3. Access & Crowds: Travel Tips
How to Get There from Tokyo (Recommended: Train)
Ashikaga Flower Park is a very popular day trip from Tokyo.
Route Take the Tohoku Shinkansen or JR Utsunomiya Line from JR Tokyo or Ueno Station to Oyama Station. Transfer to the JR Ryomo Line and get off at Ashikaga Flower Park Station (3-min walk from the exit).
Travel Time Approx. 90 to 120 minutes.
Avoiding the Crowds Weekends in December and the Christmas period are extremely busy. For a more relaxed experience with better photo opportunities, aim for a weekday visit or visit in January during the “New Year Illumination.”
4. Essential Tips for a Comfortable Visit
Prepare for the Cold (Warmer than Tokyo!)
Tochigi is significantly colder than central Tokyo at night. Since you will be outdoors for several hours, wear a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat. We highly recommend buying “Disposable Heat Packs” (Kairo) at a drugstore, convenience store, or the park gift shop to keep your hands and body warm.
Check the Last Train Schedule
The JR Ryomo Line only runs 1–2 times per hour. To ensure you don’t miss your connection back to Tokyo at Oyama Station, check the train schedule on Google Maps in advance and plan your exit accordingly.
Skip the Lines: Pre-purchase Your Tickets
During peak season, the ticket booth line can exceed an hour. Buying tickets in advance allows you to use the express entrance.
Online Booking (Recommended) Book via international platforms for a seamless experience with QR code entry.
Convenience Store (In Japan) You can use the multi-purpose kiosks at 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart. If the Japanese menu is confusing, show a staff member the phrase: “Ashikaga Flower Park ticket, please.”
Summary: A Sensory Masterpiece of Light
With 5 million LEDs, massive light murals, and the delicate scent of flowers, Ashikaga Flower Park offers an escape into a world of fantasy. If you are traveling to Japan in winter, do not miss the chance to witness the country’s most celebrated “Light Magic.”
