In February, while the lingering chill of winter remains, the Miura Peninsula is among the first in Japan to be swathed in a brilliant cloak of pink. The Miura Kaigan SAKURA Cherry Blossom Festival is a premier destination located just over an hour from central Tokyo, promising an early encounter with the Japanese spring.
The undisputed star of this event is the rare and early-blooming Kawazu-zakura (SAKURA cherry blossoms). Spanning approximately 1 kilometer from Keikyu Miura Kaigan Station to Komatsugaike Park, the railway tracks are transformed into a breathtaking corridor of pink petals that captivates even the most discerning global travelers.
The history of this festival began in 1999, when the “Miura Kaigan Machinami Business Association” started planting Kawazu-zakura to revitalize the region and inspire visitors. Since the inaugural festival in 2002, it has evolved into a world-renowned event that serves as a vibrant bridge between winter and spring.

📜 The Grace of Kawazu-zakura: Features & Highlights
The primary allure of the Miura Kaigan festival is the Kawazu-zakura (SAKURA cherry blossoms), a unique variety celebrated for its early bloom.
- What is Kawazu-zakura? Discovered in Kawazu Town on the Izu Peninsula, this variety is famous for blooming much earlier than the standard Somei Yoshino. The season typically begins in early February.
- Colors that Herald Spring: These SAKURA cherry blossoms feature a deeper, more vibrant pink than other varieties. The bold hue provides a stunning contrast against the crisp blue winter skies of Japan.
- Extended Viewing Period: Unlike other cherry blossoms that fade quickly, Kawazu-zakura remain in bloom for nearly a month, allowing travelers more flexibility in their travel planning.
- The Harmony of Pink and Gold: Alongside approximately 1,000 SAKURA cherry blossoms, brilliant yellow Nanohana (Rape blossoms) bloom in unison along the path. This contrast of vivid pink and gold, combined with the gentle scent of spring, offers a truly luxurious sensory experience.
For the 22nd festival in 2026, we expect over 300,000 visitors and photographers. Witness the ever-maturing beauty of Miura’s Kawazu-zakura and the radiant Nanohana for yourself.
🍱 Culinary Delights: Station-front “Tent Village” and Park Stalls
A journey for the soul is also a journey for the palate. Experience the local flavors of the Miura Peninsula.
- Station-front Tent Village: A bustling market at Miura Kaigan Station featuring fresh local specialties. From regional agricultural products to world-renowned Miura Tuna (Maguro) items, you can experience the bounty of the peninsula.
- Komatsugaike Park Food Stalls: At the destination park, a variety of stalls will offer festival foods to enhance your hanami (flower viewing) experience.
📸 Trains and SAKURA: Photo Spots & Etiquette

A signature sight of the Miura Kaigan SAKURA Cherry Blossom Festival is the dynamic harmony between the vibrant pink petals and the iconic red trains of the Keikyu Line.
【Photography Tips】 Please stay within the pedestrian paths and remain mindful of surrounding traffic and other visitors. Exceptional photography is born from respect for the environment.
【Important Request Regarding Overpass Photography】 There are two overpasses (bridges crossing the railway) at the venue that are popular for capturing trains and SAKURA cherry blossoms together. However, these bridges do not have pedestrian sidewalks, meaning photography takes place directly on the roadway.
In the past, the use of tripods and stepladders created dangerous congestion, obstructing vehicles and significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Under the guidance of local police, the committee has implemented “privacy/blind shades” since 2023 to discourage photography from these dangerous points.
This was a difficult decision for the committee, as we want everyone to enjoy the scenery. However, the safety of our guests and drivers is our absolute priority. Please use the designated safe photo spots to enjoy the festival securely.
📍 Facilities for a Comfortable Visit (Restrooms, etc.)
【Restroom Information】
- Within Miura Kaigan Station
- Komatsugaike Park (Permanent facilities)
- Temporary portable toilets throughout the venue
Note: Expect heavy crowds during peak hours. We strongly recommend utilizing the facilities early to ensure your comfort.
